description
The Complexity of Project Management:
Leadership, communication and learning in temporary organizations
A prerequisite for sound leadership, clear and precise information and effective knowledge transfer in increasingly projectified organizations is relevant and appropriate communication across disciplines, work cultures, organizations, and hierarchies. This complex chain of communicative activity, from the initial design phase of a product, a technology, or a strategic change through production and implementation phases requires collaboration between all the actors involved in a project, as well as communication across project boundaries.
AIMS OF THE COURSE
The aim of this course is to give students a comprehensive toolbox for managing and/or participating in complex projects and for dealing with uncertainties. The focus is on project leadership, communication and learning in multi-project organizations, e.g. how to achieve effective information transfer and communication between project leader, stakeholders, decision makers, team and project members, as well as other relevant parties in projects and across project boundaries. The discussions will deal with issues such as project roles and responsibilities, tension between line organization and temporary organization, interpersonal relations, trust, commitment, working in an international environment, among others. Other important issues are knowledge building and organizational learning. The discussions in class are largely based on ongoing research within project management and organizational discourse.
OBJECTIVES
On completion of the course, PhD-students will: -understand the fundamental characteristics of temporary organizations, i.e. projects-be able to use project management strategies and techniques to analyze, structure, plan, and organize the different phases of the project life cycle, especially the start-up phase-be able to deal with uncertainties in projects and to plan for risk management -understand the prerequisites for good leadership - be familiar with team building methods used to stimulate collaboration in work groups - possess tools for efficient interpersonal communication in a multi-project setting - learn to use reflection as a tool for critical thinking and collective knowledge creation

STRUCTURE OF COURSE
Assignments: Each seminar will include individual and/or group assignments of various types (see schedule). Some of these may be related to the students' research projects.
Project: In groups of 2 students do a study of a real-world project or a small literature survey of one of the course topics dealt. The purpose of the study/survey is to problematise theoretical frame, methodology and findings by suggesting other interpretative perspectives.
Home exam: Students write an expository essay on one of several topics concerning theories and issues dealt with during the course and relate them to the student's own "reality" |
